The Klinkhamer Crystal Blue was designed in 1984 by Dutch fly angler Hans van Klinken and has since become a true classic in fly boxes across the world. Celebrated British fly tyer Oliver Edwards included it in his book Masterclass Fly Tying: A Step-by-Step Guide to the 20 Most Important Patterns, describing it as a semi-dry fly. In fishing position, the body sits in the surface film, while the wing and hackle remain above the water. The wing can be tied with synthetic fibres or CDC, while the parachute hackle ensures perfect buoyancy.
Originally created to imitate an emerging caddis pupa in its final stage of metamorphosis, the Klinkhamer Crystal Blue can also represent many insect nymphs caught in the surface film. Highly effective and versatile, this pattern is particularly deadly in spring and early summer. An essential addition to any trout or grayling angler’s collection.
