The Klinkhamer was created in 1984 by Dutch fly angler Hans van Klinken and has since earned a permanent place in fly boxes worldwide. Renowned British fly tyer Oliver Edwards featured this pattern in his book Masterclass Fly Tying: A Step-by-Step Guide to the 20 Most Important Patterns, classifying it as a semi-dry fly. In fishing position, the body sits beneath the surface film while the wing and hackle remain visible above the water. The wing can be tied with synthetic fibres or CDC, while the parachute hackle ensures excellent buoyancy.
Originally designed to imitate an emerging caddis pupa in its final stage of metamorphosis, the Klinkhamer can also represent many insect nymphs trapped in the surface film. This fly is highly effective, especially in spring and early summer, and is a must-have for trout and grayling fishing.
